George And Amal Clooney Reportedly Claimed They Didn’t Know The Bride And Groom At Prince Harry And Meghan Markle’s Wedding
Usually the guest list of a royal wedding is awash with names like Baron Thumbley Dunsmirk, Lady Queefington, and His Royal Highness Paltry Beefshank of Donkey-Upon-Shrek. A real who’s who of British Hat-Wearing Aristocracy. But when Prince Harry got married to Meghan Markle, their wedding was full of A-list stars and celebrities. Suddenly Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla was rubbing elbows with George Clooney, Serena Williams, and America’s Queen, Oprah. Naturally, it was assumed all those American stars were Meghan’s friends, which had to make you wonder what kind of doors seven seasons on the USA Network could open for a person. As it turns out, maybe some of those huge stars weren’t exactly close friends of the bride after all. Like in the case of George and Amal Clooney, who reportedly told wedding guests they didn’t even know Harry and Meghan.
This news comes from a piece written by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s sister Rachel Johnson for AirMail (via The Mirror), titled: “Sussex Fatigue.” So yeah, you know exactly where the tone of this is going. Rachel wasn’t at Harry and Meghan’s royal wedding in May 2018; this is all based on a story allegedly told by Princess Diana’s former roommate and one of Harry’s godmothers Carolyn Bartholomew, who was invited to the wedding.
There’s a story doing the rounds that while Carolyn Bartholomew was waiting for the wedding service to start, she turned to the couple alongside her and asked how they knew Harry or Meghan.
“‘We don’t’, the Clooneys answered brightly.”
Rachel also claimed that the other celebrity guests at the wedding – such as Oprah Winfrey, David and Victoria Beckham, and James Corden – “could not possibly be old and dear friends of the bridal couple.”
Rachel adds that sources say George had a great time at the wedding, regardless of how well he knew the bride and groom, and that he danced with Meghan, then Duchess Kate.
Before Harry and Meghan’s wedding, there were numerous reports that George and Amal were on the guest list, which did feel a little weird, considering Meghan wasn’t exactly known to be BFFs with either. One source told People magazine that Meghan became pals with Amal after being introduced by mutual friends when Meghan moved to the UK. The source also claimed the two shared, “many interests.”
However, a few months after the wedding, it was reported that Harry and Meghan visited George and Amal at their house in Lake Como, Italy. So even if the first time George and Amal met Harry and Meghan was when they were shaking their hands in the receiving line after the wedding, it sounds like they have become legitimate friends. Or at the very least, friendly enough to share a plate of expensive cheese on the dock.
Then again, there is a chance that George was just being the ha-ha joke-making prank-pulling George we’ve known him to sometimes be. He could have been joking about not knowing Harry and Meghan. Because there were some big-name celebrities in attendance that were legitimate friends of Meghan, like Serena Williams. And hey, there are some wedding guest friends who probably aren’t friends anymore. And besides, who cares if Harry and Meghan invited a person to their wedding for clout? Isn’t that what the royals do anyway? There’s no way Harry can name all the fancy important Earls he’s distantly related to. I bet he taps out at 4, tops.
