Zack Snyder’s Next Movie Is Netflix’s Army of the Dead

Zack Snyder is back to direct the zombie action/horror movie Army of the Dead. The director could not be more excited to get back behind the camera after a lengthy hiatus and says, "No one’s ever let me completely loose," which means that his latest project could be pretty nuts. Snyder famously left Justice League before the movie was about to go into the reshoots phase after a family tragedy.

Joss Whedon took over and DC fans have been begging for Snyder’s original cut of the movie for over a year now.

With Justice League in the rearview mirror, Zack Snyder has paired with Netflix for Army of the Dead. Snyder will direct and produce with his partner and wife, Deborah Snyder, through their production company, Stone Quarry. Filming is expected to begin this summer with a healthy budget of around the $90 million area, which is huge. Snyder had this to say about Army of the Dead.

"I thought this was a good palate cleanser to really dig in with both hands and make something fun and epic and crazy and bonkers in the best possible way."

Zack Snyder says, "There are no handcuffs on me at all with this one," when talking about his excitement for Army of the Dead. The director has largely worked within a franchise, making movies with characters that are established and already have their own backstories. With that being said, Snyder has had some great success in the past with 300, Watchmen, Batman v Superman, etc. But, the director is ready to do something new. He explains.

"I love to honor canon and the works of art, but this is the opportunity to find a purely joyful way to express myself though a genre. It will be the most kick-ass, self-aware - but not in a wink-to-the-camera way - balls-to-the-wall zombie freakshow that anyone has ever seen. No one’s ever let me completely loose (like this)."

In addition to directing and producing Army of the Dead, Snyder came up with the story, which was later written by Joby Harold. The movie is set during a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas when a man decides to assemble a group of mercenaries to "take the ultimate gamble, venturing into the quarantined zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted." While filming is scheduled to start this summer, Snyder wishes they could start now. He had this to say.

"I love big action, I love big sequences. My movie brain starts clicking around and I was like, We need to be shooting this now! Constructing these sequences really fired me up."

Zack Snyder is looking forward to getting back behind the camera for Army of the Dead. The director wants to get "back in the trenches," noting that some of the larger movies that he has worked on in the past took away from what he loves the most. All in all, it sounds like Snyder is refreshed, recharged, and inspired to deliver an original idea to the world, which should make all Snyder fans very excited. Netflix has yet to announce a release date for Army of the Dead. The project was first announced by The Hollywood Reporter.
